First Grade Activities

This and above, on the left, is a list of our Reading vocabulary words. It is very important that you assist your child in learning them. I will review them every day in school but it is important that you review them at home as much as possible. You can help him/her learn them by games, memorizing techniques, making up sayings or songs containing the words, looking at initial and final letters, memorizing by the shape of the words, looking for letter patterns, or teaching them how to sound them out. I will assess the students in their knowledge of them. We will focus upon one set at a time. I will write on the sheet what is to be known and by which date(s). If you feel your child is advanced, please go on to as many sets of vocabulary words as you wish. Students cannot progress into the next story until they successfully know the given set of words by the due date given and are assessed by me. Each student has been given 2 copies of their vocabulary words. One is to be kept at home and gone over daily. The other set is to be kept in each student's homework folder on the "Return" side on which I will write due dates to know given sets of words, any notes, and assessment grades given in knowledge of words.

*Practice 4 words per day with your child; review them daily; and go on to the next 4.

*Circled words indicate words to be practiced more.

*Hint: Practice 4 vocabulary words from the set assigned per day he or she doesn’t feel overwhelmed and review them until known by the due date.
